Questions about becoming an archaeologist

My life dream is to become an Egyptologist or archaeologist. What books, games, sites, or anything else would you recommend? Do you think I would find anything if I began digging in our old creek in the woods?
   Lindsay, Webpost

Dr. dig responds:
You could start by reading DIG magazine and looking at DIG's Web site, which offers quizzes and links to other archaeology - and Egyptology-based sites. Many museums have their own Web sites, too. You also might want to check out your local museum! ARCHAEOLOGY magazine is another good read. The library is another great place to check out - you will find there are lots of books published on ancient Egypt. Maybe there is a local archaeology or Egyptology society that you could join? Schools and libraries often have this type of information. You might find something interesting in the creek, and you will certainly have fun looking. But do be careful. Archaeology is fun, but can be dangerous. You should always get permission from the person who owns the land that you want to excavate, and you should also get an adult to check that the site is safe before you start work. Never excavate alone.
