Do you get to see your family very often? What I am going to do is if my children want to I will ask them on what day they want to come help. Can I do this?
Dr. dig responds:
Many archaeologists that have children allow them to visit them on site on occasion, just as kids occasionally get to visit their parents who
work in offices, shops or hospitals. It is not really a good idea to have really small kids on any excavation in case they fall in the trenches or
hurt themselves with any of the number of sharp tools used in the digging process. Archaeologists must also be very careful that the site is not
unecessarily disturbed or that artifacts don't get mixed or broken. On the other hand, older kids visiting excavations can be given real
responsibilities just as long as they are serious and don't fool about. Older kids can put to good use washing pottery, running errands or even
just keeping the diggers company. But many excavations can be dangerous and even older children visiting a site must be properly supervised
by an adult at all times, and of course must never be allowed to run about or disturb the progress of the excavation.
