Questions about digging

Could you please tell me why archaeologists use the grid method to excavate a site?
--Joseph, 8, Columbia, South Carolina

Dr. dig responds:
Archaeologists need to know exactly where each find came from. By dividing their site into a grid or a network of measured squares, it's possible to plot all their finds on a map or plan with maximum accuracy.
