Questions about Egypt

Why were cats so important in Egypt, and are they really the guardians of the underworld?
Nomar, Web post

Dr. dig responds:
Cats were important in Egypt because they were linked with the cult of the cat headed goddess Bast. They were popular household pets, and were used to hunt birds in the marshes. But they were not guardians of the underworld.
