What is known of the Scorpion Kings of Egypt?

Dr. dig responds:
The earliest kings of Egypt lived at the very end of the prehistoric age, a
time when writing was just developing. As a result, we must piece together
our evidence for this period from archaeological finds. The names and titles
of the earliest kings were written using simple hieroglyphs. One king was
identified with the sign of the scorpion, and Egyptologists call this king
the Scorpion King. We know very little about him. He did not rule the whole
of Egypt, as Egypt had not yet become one country. However, a ceremonial
carved object known today as the "Scorpion Macehead" shows us the king
wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt and holding a hoe and inspecting the
fields. Around him are images of defeated enemies, suggesting that Scorpion
has military power. Unfortunately, the back of the macehead is damaged‹it
may well have had a second carving. We do not have a tomb for the Scorpion
King, although some Egyptologists have suggested that he was buried at the
ancient cemetery site of Abydos.
