Questions about Egypt

Where did the ancient Egyptians get their gold?

Dr. dig responds:
The Egyptians certainly loved to use gold! Archaeologists find gold glittering on so many Egyptian artifacts, on jewellery, mummy cases, even furniture!

Most of the gold that the Egyptians used came from mines between the Nile and the Red Sea. Gold came from other distant sources as well. Queen Hatshepsut (issue three of dig Magazine has an interesting article about her)sent a trading expedition to the land of Punt (probably present day Somalia) which brought back to Egypt things like exotic ivory, wood, spices as well as gold. Did you know that silver was even more precious than gold to the ancient Egyptians?

I did come up with an article on the web for you about ancient Egyptian gold mining, though it refers to mining in Egypt during the Byzantine period, rather than to mining during the Old or Middle Kingdom. Go to www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/9703/Meyer-9703.html
