What marriage customs did the ancient Egyptians practice?
Dr. dig responds:
In ancient Egypt, marriage seems never to have been a religious ceremony. The Egyptian term for marriage was simply "to found a house," and a man and a woman became married by setting up house together, ideally in a new building separate from the parents of each.
Although a man could marry more than one wife, very few examples have been documented, and even in the pharaoh's household, monogamy (marriage to one wife) was the rule.
The many wives of Rameses II and Rameses III seem to have been marriages of diplomatic convenience and necessity.
