How do Egyptologists date pyramids?

Dr. dig responds:
Some of the later pyramids contain inscriptions (Pyramid Texts) that tell us who built them. Others, like the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, have graffiti and inscriptions left by workmen, which again tell us the name of the pyramid builder. Where there is no direct written evidence, archaeologists must guess at the owner based on the style of the pyramid and the types of finds found in and around it -- this evidence can include non-royal burials and graffiti left by early tourists.
