Questions about becoming an archaeologist

What are some likes and dislikes about being an archaeologist?
Faith, Age 12, New York, New York

Dr. dig responds:
Being an archaeologist is so exciting because there is no telling what interesting artifact might come to light in the next shovelful of earth. And, an archaeologist's job is never boring because there are so many different things to do on an excavation. But, if I had to think of something I didn't like about being an archaeologist, I guess I would have to say that I wish I could skip the sore muscles and stiff fingers I get the first day or two after beginning a new season of excavation. It's hard work digging, kneeling, and gripping a trowel, and all require using muscles a body does not use normally. Still, a few sore muscles for a couple of days is a small price to pay for the thrill of discovery!
