What methods were used to excavate and investigate the site of the Terracotta Army in China?

Dr. dig responds:
The Terracotta Army -- 7,000 life-sized model soldiers and 600 horses -- was found in the tomb of the first emperor of China, Shi-Huangdi. It is dated to the year of his death, 210 b.c. The tomb was discovered in 1974 by a group of farmers digging a well, and additional chambers were discovered in 1976. The tomb itself is not yet fully excavated -- work is still in progress, using up-to-date methods of modern scientific excavation and analysis. Meanwhile, as work continues, part of the site has been roofed so that it can be used as a museum.
