Why don't you start your research with this super book: The Story of Writing: Alphabets, Hieroglyphs and Pictograms by Andrew Robinson, published by Thames and Hudson in 1995.

This is an excellent scholarly work on many different early writing systems. It will provide you with a good background to ancient writing systems, and, most importantly, a good bibliography.
