Can you tell me anything about the amphoras of ancient Greece?
Dr. dig responds:
Books and books have been written about ancient Greek amphoras, and there would be enough space on this page to tell you everything I know about Greek amphoras.
What I can say is that some ancient Greek amphoras were used at drinking parties, called symposia, where the men of ancient Greece gathered to talk politics and tell stories. The amphoras were used to hold wine. In ancient Greece, wine was diluted with water which was held in another vessel called a hydria. The water and wine were mixed in a krater and ladled into a cup called a kylix.
All the vessels used to serve wine, including the amphora, were usualled decorated with black-figure or red-figure painting. The decoration included scenes from mythology and was intended to inspire story telling or conversation about war and politics.
