Questions about Greece and Rome
Who was Pompey?
Dr. dig responds:
Pompey The Great was born Sept. 29, 106 B.C., in Rome and died Sept. 28, 48 B.C., at Pelusium, in Egypt. His name in Latin is Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus. Pompey was one of the great statesmen and generals of the late Roman Republic, a triumvir (61-54 B.C.), and the associate and later opponent of Julius Caesar. He was initially called Magnus (the Great) by his troops in Africa (82-81 B.C.). In 67 B.C., ships found it almost impossible to sail the Mediterranean Sea without being harassed by pirate ships. Pompey was given dictatorial powers, and within 40 days, he swept the western area of the Mediterranean free of pirates.
