Do you know a site on Chinese mummies?
Dr. dig responds:
In 1994 a cover article in Discover Magazine laid out picture after picture of ancient mummies clothed in the brightest colours
imaginable. They were an archaelogical find that no one expected to find: well preserved and ritually buried mummies in the remote
north-west of China, near Urumchi, along the ancient caravan route through the heart of Asia. Most significantly, the mummies have
Caucasian features and date back more than 3500 years ago. What they reveal completley changes our understanding of prehistoric
population movement in central Asia.
The mummies of Urumchi have been published in a book by Elizabeth Barber, The Mummies of Urumchi. You will also find loads
of information about these muumies by searching the web for "mummies of Urumchi"
Another Chinese mummy is that of Lady Dai who was a Chinese noblewoman from the Han dynasty who died around 168 B.C. Her
well preserved body was found in a deep tomb in hunan province in 1972. Examination of her body showed that Lady Dai had been
embalmed in a bath of mercury salts. Uggh.
