Do you have any information on Makah Indian totem poles? I've been to some websites but found nothing on totem poles.
Dr. dig responds:
I can't find anything on the web either that is specificically about Makah totem poles, but...here are two useful websites for you to browse in your research on the Makah.
www.makah.com/museum.htm
This is the website for the Makah Cultural Research Center where there is on exhibit many artifacts from the Makah's ancestral village of Ozette. The website will direct you to resources and information pertaining to Makah history and culture with a full bibliography. Perhaps you could write to the museum at the address they give for information about totem poles.
The other great website is:
www.learningspace.org/instruct/jr_high/projects/bgilbert/makah.htm
This website was created by a 7th grade class in Washington. The page will lead you to a world of information about the Makah, the archaeological site, its history and culture, with some photos.
If there's a chance that you can get a hold of the book, Eyewitness to Discovery by Brian Fagan, you will find in it a short biography of the excavator of Ozette, Richard Daugherty, and a popular account of his discovery--it makes a great story, but there's not much in it about totem poles.
Lastly, you could try content.lib.washington.edu which is the website of the Library of the University of Washington.
