This Guide contains project ideas, short answer, extended response, and a matching section. The variation is designed to have the children think critically, as well as to test their comprehension. An answer key to the matching can be found at the end of the guide.
Extended Response: Comprehension & Critical Thinking
The questions below can be used as written, simply answered in complete sentences, or easily transformed into longer essay (ELA) style questions, or even research topics. In any case, have the students support their answers with details from the text or use critical thinking skills to create a thorough and interesting answer. Consider the level of your students when deciding how to use the questions.
"An Ancient Hangout" p. 6-9
"The Other Side of the Coin" p. 10-13
- Every Greek city had one main center called the agora. Explain what this was and why it was an important part of Greek life.
- Write about a place in your school or your community that serves as the agora. Explain the part that it plays in your daily life.
- Project (Individual or Group): Pretend you are on the planning board of your town. Design an agora for the community. What would be included in it? How would it be decorated? What would take place there? (Create a sketch or a model to demonstrate your idea.)
"If at First you Don't Succeed . . . " p. 16-21
- Explain the differences and similarities between excavation and survey archeology. Use a Venn diagram to organize this information.
- List the types of professionals that may take part in a survey. Write about ways that they could work together to discover important information about a site.
- What is the goal of the EKAS?
- What is the goal of the APKAS?
- What are the archeologists trying to understand about the small Greek Islands they are studying? What conclusion would you draw?
"The Greeks Take Sicily" p. 22-25
- Project: Read the article on pages 16-21 and create a timeline from 650 B.C. to 570 B.C. Use the information in the article and fill in the gaps with your own conclusions about this time period. Be sure to use different colored pens to differentiate between actual facts and your own thoughts.
- Write a welluctured persuasive essay based on the archeologists' finds at Abdera telling of the fate of the ancient people there. Draw your own conclusions based on the evidence presented. Your conclusion must be a logical possibility.

- Project (Individual or Group): Read the definition of a mosaic on page 28. Use tiny colored squares of paper to create a mosaic that represents something special to you.
Critical Thinking Essay: Based on the article on page 32, what do you think that the archeologists uncover at the ancient site of the Isthmian Games? Give reasons to support your answers.
