The Lenape Meadow Excavation
The Lenape Meadow Excavation is a public archaeology project with spring and fall programs, though the programs are currently on haitus. It is sponsored by the Somerset County Park Commission's Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge. Participation is based solely on interest for ages 15 or above (or under 15 with an adult). The site has attracted high-school students, members of the general public, avocational archaeologists, and graduate students in archaeology and other fields. The project sessions are conducted on Sundays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., from April through June and September through November. Participation is limited, so register early by calling the Somerset County Environmental Education Center. Additional work may be done on finds uncovered from a previous excavation at the Lord Stirling Manor site. For more information, call 908-766-2489, or visit its Web site at: http://home.att.net/~briansnat/.
The New Jersey State Museum
The New Jersey State Museum in Trenton offers a variety of opportunities for children and their families throughout the year. For more information, visit its Web site at: www.state.nj.us/state/museum/.
The Center for Archaeological Studies
The Center for Archaeological Studies at Montclair State University sends out teams of archaeologists to middle and high schools for one-day or multi-day presentations on archaeological topics, allowing children to learn in their own environments. Students in fourth through twelfth grades learn stone tool-making and ancient spear-throwing and have the chance to participate in interactive slide presentations. There are usually four archaeologists to assist groups of up to 75 students. Among the activities included in the presentation is placing seismic sensors in the soil to study the various layers. The university also offers a four-week field school for high-school and college students, starting in late June. For more information, call 973-655-7556, or visit its Web site at: www.CHSS.montclair.edu/archaeology/cas.htm.
